Partnership for Health

Taiwan Advance MedTech Centre (TAMC) is a joint endeavour between Penang technopreneurs and the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH) Foundation, the largest NGO hospital group in Taiwan. TAMC brings CGMH’s associated medical industry partners to collaborate in smart hospital technology with our healthcare providers, pharma, biotech, and medical industry players in Penang, as well as in Malaysia. Displaying the newest medical devices and solutions yet to be popularized in Malaysian healthcare, TAMC places an emphasis on SMART solutions, AI-empowered healthcare, advanced robotics, as well as medical devices to elevate the quality of local healthcare. TAMC takes advantage of the strengths of Taiwan’s competitive and cost-effective healthcare system and its innovative medical device industry.

POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENTS

A collaboration for a new era of healthcare, TAMC’s formation hopes to revolutionize Penang’s and, in turn, Malaysia’s healthcare industry. The goal is to improve the efficiency of Malaysia’s national healthcare system through exposure to smart hospital management systems and other cutting-edge medical technologies, as well as the sharing of specialist knowledge.

Malaysia’s Healthcare Network

Malaysia’s
Healthcare Network

With its trained physicians and high-quality of care, Malaysia is one of Southeast Asia’s forerunners in medical tourism, successfully hosting medical tourists from across the globe, from our neighbors in Indonesia and Singapore to those all the way from the United States. While Malaysia’s healthcare is internationally reputable, the challenge for any country, developed or developing alike, is to have a national healthcare system that is affordable and accessible to all. Malaysia’s healthcare system is burdened and plagued by long waitlists. In this case, the proven and commonly practiced strategy for many health agencies is to have an efficient hospital management system with data analytics as a backbone, which is what TAMC can assist with.

Penang’s Healthcare Network

Penang’s
Healthcare Network

Penang generates nearly 50% of Malaysia’s medical tourism receipts, with Penang’s Center for Medical Tourism consisting of 13 member hospitals with over 3,000 beds as well as 16 associate members. Penang’s hospitals are committed to delivering medical treatment at a world-class standard, with many healthcare institutions having ISO 9001 accreditation for Quality Management Systems and Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. There is boundless potential for further expansion, and Penang’s already gold-standard healthcare can be elevated to even greater heights with TAMC.

Nicknamed the “Silicon Valley of the East”, Penang is home to not only a prosperous electrical and electronics industry but to a flourishing medical device industry as well, making a name for itself in MedTech manufacturing. According to InvestPenang, the state has become home to a third of Malaysia’s medical device companies, providing the perfect foundation for expansion. In the medical device industry, early access to know-how and joint collaboration with technology leaders is imperative to elevate the standard as well as product research and development (R&D). TAMC aims to be a knowledge and technology-sharing conduit between Malaysia and Taiwan in this regard, particularly in monitors, robotic arms, and cell therapies.

Along with its established ecosystem, Penang’s multicultural community makes it perfect and ever-ready for foreign investment and collaboration. Penang is glowing with the potential for further growth in the MedTech area, and TAMC’s bridging of Taiwan with Penang’s medical industry will allow for improved investment in biotech, pharma, and semiconductor-related medical devices, paving the way for Penang to lead Malaysia’s MedTech manufacturing sector.

Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH)

TAMC enables access to the medical devices and solutions offered by Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. It will enable CGMH to share its success story in digitized and smart hospital management, reducing costs and thereby leading to a much more efficient healthcare system.

CGMH is a non-profit medical institution and the largest private hospital in Taiwan. With its glowing reputation of continuously pursuing perfection, as well as its eagerness to take part in medical co-operations to aid developing nations to streamline their healthcare systems, Chang Gung has collaborated with Malaysian hospitals, academic institutions, and the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) in the past, and TAMC will allow for much deeper collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Linkage to Med Tech Partners

TAMC is not the first time Taiwan and Malaysia’s health industries have collaborated. We have been working with Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW), pharma, biotech, and health industries for over a decade in research projects via our sister company, Info Kinetics’s Clinical Research Centre. CGMH has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Malaysian hospitals, universities, and the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA), offering free training programmes. In the academic sector, CGMH has collaborated with institutions such as UM, IMU, and UTAR in medical research as well. These established information exchanges will be expanded further with TAMC, in addition to technology transfer in terms of medical devices and smart hospital management systems.

Taiwanese medical technologies are recognized globally, with the nation playing a leading role in the global supply of semiconductors and being at the forefront of integrating cutting-edge technologies into the biotech and medical industries.

TAMC’s establishment will see the formation of close linkages with CGMH’s MedTech partners, allowing healthcare providers in Malaysia to use the devices and solutions already in use within CGMH but yet to be popularised locally. TAMC will enable healthcare providers in Malaysia to be exposed to new technologies, such as more advanced monitors, robotic arms for surgeries, and cell therapy technology. Penang’s burgeoning MedTech manufacturing industry also offers fertile ground for improved investment in biotech and pharmaceutical devices with TAMC.

Linkage to Medical Care

Taiwan’s healthcare system is believed to be one of the best in the world, with leading specialities in orthopaedics, tumour and cancer detection, microsurgery, and more. TAMC will allow Malaysian healthcare providers to gain access to the medical expertise fostered at CGMH.

TAMC’s proposed medical forum for patients with certain diseases will allow for open dissemination and exchange of knowledge. CGMH has conducted distance specialist consultations over distance in remote areas of Taiwan, and by acting as a conduit, TAMC will allow CGMH to replicate this telemedicine or long-distance clinical service in Malaysian kampongs, where currently only non-specialist medical assistance and care can be provided to patients. Teleconsultation modality will greatly benefit rural areas in Malaysia such as Sarawak, improving access to medical advice and ensuring no one is left out.
